5 Android apps you can’t miss this week

Welcome to the 435th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the headlines from the past week:

  • WhatsApp may soon add another feature. The new feature is editing messages. A screenshot of the new feature started making the rounds this week and it’s a pretty simple thing. You can clearly see an edit button there. Click the link to view the screenshot and learn more.
  • Google combines Google Meet and Google Duo. It’s actually a very good decision. Both apps do more or less the same thing and they will grow faster with a dedicated team working on a single product. It’s very different from the old Google where they would have split these two services into four services for some reason. Fortunately, that old Google is gone now.
  • The official YouTube app got a big update this week. It lets you stream to your TV while still being mostly usable. The new direction lets the phone be the companion and the TV still shows the content. It’s actually a pretty good change since you can do things like read comments and stuff a lot easier with the new UI.
  • Google Play Points is about to get more useful. Google Play is changing things up where you can use Google Play Points when paying for in-app purchases. This will work as a payment method. It’s similar to how Samsung was making points in the Samsung Theme Store. You can select points and pay with them. Click on the link to find out more.
  • RCS is having issues in Google Messages. One of our editors enabled it and immediately started receiving spam. He wrote the article about it and got a response from Google. Later, Google temporarily disabled RCS in India, after finding that Indian companies were abusing RCS to send promotional messages. You can click on the links to learn more.

Lost Shadow: Dark Knight

Price: free to play

Lost Shadow: Dark Knight is an action RPG with a fairly typical story. You play as a knight who embodies the last glimmer of hope in a world plunged into darkness by war. It’s a 2D game and it’s a bit weird at first. You get used to it pretty quickly. The world is full of bad guys and you hack and kill them to death. During this time you become more powerful, fight bosses and progress in the game. There is a card system that serves your abilities as well as your restore items. There is also an idle game element where your hero gets stronger even when you are not playing. Some may like it, some may not, but it’s not bad if you like this type of game.

Screenshot of MonkeyWerx 2022

MonkeyWerx is an online store that sells a bunch of stuff. It’s mostly craft stuff like you’ll find on Etsy, but it’s kind of cool that it’s its own thing. The app works pretty well. You can browse store inventory, purchase items, and also listen to the podcast. There is also a blog section. The podcast is a military and political commentary, so you can enjoy it or not depending on your tastes. The things you can buy, however, look pretty good. Personally, I’ve never shopped with MonkeyWerx before, but I can’t see anyone not enjoying a good beard balm on occasion.

Rotaeno is a new Japanese-themed rhythm game. The mechanics are fairly standard. You can swipe, tap and slide your fingers around the phone to hit the notes in time with the beat. This one also adds gyro support for a bit more zazz. There are plenty of tracks from a number of rhythm game composers in a few different genres. The developers also promise more songs in future updates. The gyroscope feature works great and it’s always nice to see a new rhythm game on mobile.

Pokédexus 2022 screenshot

Pokedexus is an unofficial fan-made Pokedex app for Android. It contains all 898 Pokémon and all of their variants. It also has a few little extras like a quiz game, leaderboards, and a few other mini-games to keep things interesting. Honestly, we don’t know if it’s a game or an app, but it functions primarily as a Pokedex, making it a companion app. It’s completely free, with no in-app purchases or ads to mess things up. It also has an item dex, ability dex, type dex, and nature dex so you can use it for more than just Pokemon.

Diablo Immortal

Price: free to play

Diablo Immortal is the second massive mobile game release in the last month. The other was Apex Legends Mobile. It’s the same genre as all the other Diablo games. It’s an action RPG with MMORPG-style interactions where you choose a hero, unlock abilities, and explore the world while collecting loot. You can interact with other players in different ways and it’s a true MMORPG in that regard. Otherwise, it’s a mobile Diablo game with some of the usual pitfalls of mobile games.

Yes, this game gets a second paragraph because the launch wasn’t amazing. Apparently there is a problem with the game on Samsung devices with Exynos chipsets. Blizzard is looking into that as we speak. Otherwise, people generally seem to be enjoying the game. It’s likely going to compete for top honors of the year when December rolls around.
