60ft giant Japanese robot can now move on its own

In what is probably a big technological leap but a horrendous development for mankind, a 60-foot Japanese robot can now move on its own.

After seeing everything 2020 has already thrown at us, we probably shouldn’t have tempted fate and created a giant being that could potentially kill dozens of people with just one step – but here we are.

Construction on the robot began in January, and after making a wobbly attempt during its first steps earlier this month, it can now move around unaided.

Check out images of the giant machine, accelerated to four times its speed, below:

The creation was built in Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, and was inspired by the popular robot Gundam which was introduced in 1979 in the Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise animated series. Mobile Suit Gundam. He weighs 25 tons, each of his 6.5-foot hands alone weighing 1,300 pounds.

After months of work, the RX-78 Gundam mech can now stand, kneel, turn its head and point to the sky. At this point, we can only hope that his kneeling is a sign of respect for his human overlords, and that he’s not pointing fingers at the space robots lurking to invade us.

The robot moves slowly and deliberately, and has perfect control over its legs as well as its intricate hands and fingers. Its scale is demonstrated in another clip where construction workers can be seen next to it, and the robot turns its head and opens its eyes to look at them.

Members of the public were to take a closer look at the Gundam Factory amusement park robot, which was due to open in October but has been delayed indefinitely due to the ongoing health crisis. The Model RX-78 Gundam will now remain at the port of Yokohama, where it is currently held, for about a year.

A statement on the factory’s website reads:

This decision was made to ensure the health and safety of our fans and employees in response to the global spread of COVID-19. We apologize to all of our fans who have been eagerly awaiting our grand opening and ask for your understanding.

In the meantime, we will prepare ourselves so that all our visitors can have fun in complete safety.

Mobile Suit Gundam has been compared to Transformers and Power rangers, with several different iterations after the release of the original series. Statues of the character can be seen all over Japan, although the RX-78 is the first to move.

Hoping the robot doesn’t use its new moves against us!
